Roadmap Watch: Latest changes to Microsoft Teams roadmap

Microsoft Teams Roadmap gets constant updates. With these posts I make it easy for readers to see what are latest changes in Microsoft Teams or related products/features roadmap. As always if you want to see the up to date situation check out the public roadmap – blog post is always a snapshot of that moment when it is written.

Highlights :

  • Chat Bubbles are moved to May 2021 (from April)
    • “Chats sent during a Teams meeting will surface on the screens of all meeting participants, making the chat more central to the conversation.”
  • Viva Connections Desktop appeared in the roadmap. Targeted for this month
    • “With the new Viva Connection Desktop, you can bring your intranet directly into Teams Desktop. The app’s icon and name match your company brand and enable employees to discover, navigate and consume your top sites in Teams. The app gives employees a window into the rest of the company intranet by using the same global navigation as the SharePoint app bar.”
  • Low data mode in Teams is rolling out
    • “Whether you want to preserve data or are in a location with a poor or limited network connection, sometimes it’s helpful to limit the amount of data you’re using during a video call. A new low data mode allows users to cap the amount of data that will be used during Teams video calls as well as establish different settings based on network availability.”
  • Forms: Poll in teams meeting support 1k meeting/webinar
    • “For the large meeting, Forms poll will support the overall user experience and to help presenter could improve the meeting engagement.”
  • Walkie Talkie is coming to iOS devices in June 2021. Walkie Talkie has been available for Android a while now so it is great that iOS is getting that during summer as well!
    • “Walkie Talkie, a push-to-talk experience that enables clear and secure voice communication over the cloud, enables teams to communicate instantly and always stay on the same page. This native built-in app in Teams turns employee or company-owned iOS smartphones and tablets into a walkie-talkie, reducing the number of devices employees must carry and lowering costs for IT.”

Features like Microsoft Teams webinar support (custom attendee registration) is still on schedule for March – early April and PowerShell support for Team Templates is rolling out. These are not included in the table below since their last modified date was earlier (5.3.2021)
