Roadmap watch: what’s coming to Teams during Summer 2021?

What can be expected to roll out to Microsoft Teams during this summer? Short answer: a lot! Massively! I highlight some of those features in this blog post as a summary. As always – schedules can change. Some features may be pushed back if the testing reveals some issues there. While it does sting when cool ; and especially useful things; are pushed back weeks or several months, it is always better to have a rollout of working features instead of something that is not final. Or even the minimum viable version aka v1.

There are lots of different sources, when you want to stay up to date with the roadmap

• Admin Center bulletins. These are not accessible by standard users. If you are an admin in any tenant (even trial) you get these bulletins
• Public Roadmap. This is the place that keeps showing the latest updates.
• Tech Community blog post and articles
• Twitter and LinkedIn and occasional other social media.

Let’s get started!

• Microsoft Search will find meeting recordings based on transcripts. Transcripts will be added to the search index and you can start finding meetings based on what was said there. This depends if your language is supported in meeting transcript. Coming to targeted release mid-late July. Standard release late July – early August.
• Paging in Large Gallery is rolling out soon and will be completed by mid-July. When you choose Large Gallery you can view the next 49 videos. With this Teams supports showing 98 video feeds in a meeting. Paging will be available to normal 3×3 gallery view in September.

• Include device audio when sharing on Teams for iOS and Android. This will allow you to play, for example, videos on your mobile device while sharing it to the Teams meeting. Coming soon: late June.
• Teams Meeting Auto Recording is rolling from June until mid-July. This allows meeting organizer to set meeting options so that the meeting is automatically recorded: recording starts when the first participant joins the meeting. Recording is stored on first participant’s OneDrive – meeting organizer will have permissions to it.

What is interesting in that Admin Center Bulletin photo is that Managed mode is coming to Teams meeting as well: attendees can only see shared content and the videos of people you spotlight. I can’t wait to experiment and tell more about that to you! And Provide CART Captions will also help once it rolls out.

• Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams is getting a lots of facelift during the summer (rolling out during June-August, starting with stickers. images, note grids and shapes ). These features come to Teams/Web Whiteboard – making it finally matching Whiteboard App in features. Collaboration cursors (who is doing what on the board), Laser Pointer & Follow Along(lock view) helps to give presentations using a Whiteboard while Templates (finally!) can speed up formal boards. Fluid components will allow simultaneous co-authoring on the board and Reaction Stickers will bring some fun & reactions to Whiteboard. And those look really cool.

Of course the ability to choose any existing Whiteboard to a Teams meeting is something that we have hoped to see for a long time. Ability to re-use Whiteboards has been a big ask. The other big ask – external collaborators on a Whiteboard – is roadmapped for September.

• Pin chat messages (June)
• Live Components ( Fluid Components) in Teams Chat (work on message content together: tables, actions items or lists). Anyone in the chat can edit them. (June)

And yes, those live components will be part of meetings as well! Agenda, action points and notes.

• Viva Insights is getting Headspace and Pomodoro timer during the summer/later this year as well. The new Focus Time looks just superb!

Viva Insights is also bringing in the Quiet Time settings later this year. Too bad they are not here before summer vacation time.

• Users can select if Office Documents are opened in Teams, web or Desktop app. This has been a big ask as well because people want to be more in control where those Docs, Excels and presentations open.
• Shared Channels support tabs for 3rd party / custom apps. (July). This rolls ahead of Shared Channels so developers can prepare for them early. It also means that Shared Channels will support apps when they arrive in November!
• Video filters to adjust your video feed in pre-join (August)
• RTMP Streaming Support Enables support for your users to stream their Teams meetings to large audiences through RTMP, including endpoints outside your organization. (July)
• And there will be more news for Microsoft Teams Rooms and Devices. I really like the front row option for MTRs (Microsoft Teams Rooms) that brings people from other sites and locations to the “same table” with people in the meeting room.

Jabra PanaCast 50 will solve issues with smaller rooms – I have heard lots of good from the current PanaCast.

And Poly Studio E70 looks really good as well – something that can help with larger meeting rooms.

What is really interesting also are the first Teams Certified earbuds from Logitech that are coming out later (“soon” unfortunately this was not defined when the soon is – so it may be equivalent to “later this year”. Hopefully sooner – I can’t wait to be able to test these!).

Microsoft Teams: Prevent PTSN attendees from unmuting in meetings	Presenters and Organizers can now prevent PSTN participants from unmuting. This change also allows PSTN participants to request to speak by raising their hand in a meeting via dial-pad command (press *5).	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Students and educators get a notification when a new Class Notebook page is distributed	We are making a new update that will allow any Educator using Page Distribution in the OneNote client to ensure that all students get a notification in Teams after a page is distributed! Whiteboard: Inking improvements	New improvements and capabilities have been added to the inking experience win Whiteboard for the web. Users can now: Change pen colors, change pen thickness, use highlighter, intelligently convert their ink shapes, use keyboard shortcuts to switch between tools.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Assign the Presenter Role in Meetings for GCC – High	Organizers can now assign one or more Presenters in their meetings with the “Who can present?” meeting option.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Live Transcription with speaker attribution (for additional SKUs)	Live transcripts provide another way to follow along with what has been said and who said it. After a meeting, the transcript file is automatically saved in the chat tab for that meeting. We are now expanding this feature to Office 365 E1, Office 365 A1, Office 365/Microsoft 365 A3, Office 365/Microsoft 365 A5, Microsoft 365 F1, Office 365/Microsoft 365 F3, Microsoft 365 Business Basic SKUs. Microsoft Teams: Windows 10 Native Notifications	Choose the style of your notifications: built-in Teams or Windows native notifications. The latter brings a suite of benefits, like respecting focus assist mode which enables you to avoid distracting notifications when you need to focus, and integrating with Windows 10 action center to helps you review your notifications in one place. Microsoft Teams and PowerPoint for Business: Annotation support in PowerPoint Live in Teams and Slideshow	We are introducing virtual laser pointer and ink annotations so presenters can engage more with their audience by drawing attention or clarifying certain sections of the PowerPoint deck. Just as you would use a physical laser point in a room, PowerPoint Live allows you to effectively point at different places in the presentation so the audience can easily follow along what’s on the slide. Microsoft Teams: Power Automate templates to be added to teams templates	Team templates enable end users to create the right team with predefined channels and preinstalled apps. Select Microsoft provided team templates will include a new Power Automate tab. In the tab, you can find a variety of Power Automate flow templates that support the template type. Microsoft Teams: Pairing the channel and the corresponding SharePoint folder name.	When renaming a Teams’ channel, the corresponding SharePoint folder will be renamed and reflect the new name. This will help create consistency across Microsoft 365 endpoints, making it easier on users to find their files from anywhere.  This new feature will be available for all Standard and Private channels. For Standard channels – The corresponding folder in SharePoint will be renamed. For Private channels – The corresponding site name and the folder in SharePoint will be renamed. For legacy Teams channels that were renamed prior to this rollout, there will be no change in experience. Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Graph API for Teams Export (Preview)	Enterprise Information Archiving (EIA) for Microsoft Teams is a key scenario for our customer as it allows them to solve for retention, indexing, e-discovery, classification, and regulatory requirements. The Teams Export API allows the export of Teams Messages (1:1 and group chat) along with attachments (file links and sticker), emojis, GIFs and user @Mentions. This API supports polling daily Teams messages and allows archiving of deleted messages up to 30 days.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: IP Based audio/video support for Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows	IP based audio and video devices can be selected as sources in Teams Rooms making device installation and deployment easier, by avoiding long USB cable runs and use of USB extenders.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Teams casting for Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows	For quick ad-hoc sessions that don’t necessarily require setting up a formal meeting, people can use Teams casting to wirelessly connect to a Teams Room running on Windows, and display content from their mobile phone. Users can broadcast their screen and cast content stored on locally on their device or accessible via Office 365.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Access files offline on mobile	The Teams mobile app now allows you to access files even when you are offline or in bad network conditions. Simply select the files you need access to, and Teams will keep a downloaded version to use in your mobile app. You will find all your files that are available offline in the files section of the app.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: New Power Automate entry points in-Teams	Users will soon be able to use message extensions and message actions to start building a Power Automate flow from a template.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Device management automatic alerting in Teams Admin Center	Device management automatic alerting  provides more efficiency in  identifying devices issues by triggering notifications that can be turned into an immediate correction action.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Transfer Calls between desktop and mobile	Transfer calls between desktop and mobile allows a user to move their call between devices.	In development	June CY2021
Whiteboard: Migrating previously created boards	Tenants in locations that are currently storing new whiteboards in European datacenters will have previously created whiteboards migrated to European datacenters.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Room Remote for Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows	Control in-room meeting devices using a new experience on the Teams mobile app. Controls include: turn mic on/off, turn camera on/off, adjust audio, leave the meeting.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Meeting room capacity notifications for Microsoft Teams Room	Alerts in-room meeting participants if the room is over-capacity based on data defined in a room account. Not all cameras will support this feature.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Guest Access in DoD	Teams now supports Guest Access between tenants inside the DoD Cloud.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Virtual Breakout Rooms for DoD	Meeting hosts can create breakout rooms to be used by meeting participants for smaller group discussion. They can assign participants to a room and call them back to the larger group when the breakout is complete.	In development	June CY2021
Microsoft Teams: Approvals in Teams	Get to results faster with Approvals in Microsoft Teams. Easily create, manage, share, and act on approvals directly from your hub for teamwork.	In development	June CY2021
